Exploring the Various Types of Network Cables

Network Cable With Fiber Optic Strands Emitting Light

Almost every modern communication system depends on network cabling. Network cables transfer data from one device to another. Often, reliable connectivity between these devices depends on the right kind of network cable. The question is, do you know the different types of network cables?

Here, we are going to explore the features, deployment considerations, and uses of four different types of network cables so that you can learn how to choose from among these types.

Coaxial Cables

A coaxial cable is a type of network cable that has a single copper conduction at the center and a plastic insulator that lays between the center conductor and the braided metal shield. The metal shield is the most important feature of the coaxial cable, as it blocks out any elements or interferences that can affect the transfer of data from one device to another. The insulation between the metal shield and the conductor is designed to protect the conductor, which is the core of the coaxial cable.

Fiber Optic Cable

A fiber optic cable contains either a plastic or glass core shielded by a buffer, a jacket, or cladding. Any one of these layers is designed to protect the cable from external interference and potential damage.

Unlike other types of network cables, the fiber optic cable is suitable for carrying data over long distances, say across the expansive sea. Specifically, the single-mode optic fiber cable supports longer distances, while the multi-mode optic fiber is suitable for carrying more data. Often, it is the standard cable that connects networks in different locations and across buildings.

The most significant quality associated with fiber optic cable is its center glass core, which is surrounded by multiple layers of protective material. The purpose of the protective material is to prevent the cables from transmitting light instead of data whenever there is an electrical obstruction.

Shielded Twisted Pair Cables

The shielded twisted pair cables, commonly called STP cables, are a favorite choice when doing business installations. As the name suggests, STP cables are colored wires that are twisted around one another to form pairs. Usually, a single STP cable can have four colorful pairs of wires wrapped by a metal shield and covered using a single plastic sheath.

Unshielded Twisted Pair Cables

The fourth type of network cable commonly used to transfer data from one location to another is the unshielded twisted pair cables, abbreviated as UTP cables. This type of network cable is suitable for industrial computers that carry a significant amount of data. One significant feature of the UTP cable is its conductors, which form a circuit that stops any electromagnetic interference from external sources.
